Do you want to do English with me this year? If you do, what days and times are best for you?
Dave Moses October 7, 2011 at 12:38 pm
Bricks Invitational
Bill,

I just wanted you to know that I am not happy that Jess did not provide age group awards for the DU. I know turnout was low but when you are paying $100 for an even that should not matter.

You were one of if not the first to sign up. There could have been 50 in your age group and you still would have won or at least finished on the podium.

I put out the call for us to support the event. I wanted you to be properly thanked for your outstanding effort.

Thanks for the ear,

Dave
William George McArthur June 28, 2011 at 6:26 pm
Dave, my reward was arriving early for the event and finding you already on site, set up, and ready to help. That's amazing to me and much appreciated.
Dave Moses June 29, 2011 at 7:31 am
Thanks Bill. I wish I could do more. I will try and make and events this year that have a DU.
William George McArthur July 10, 2011 at 5:13 am
Dave, are you in tomorrow? I would like to buy a spare tire and tube to bring to Indiana.
Dave Moses July 10, 2011 at 7:10 am
I will be and still have the bag with your back up tire and tube. I brought it to the DU but at the end of the day you were gone.

Just give me a call in the morning.
Dave Moses October 7, 2011 at 11:57 am
Did you need anything? We will be there around 6:30.
William George McArthur October 7, 2011 at 12:19 pm
Thanks, Dave. Nothing that I know of. Just rode the bike and cleaned and lubed it. Everything seems good.
Dave Moses October 7, 2011 at 12:38 pm
Cecilia and I are looking forward to seeing you on Sunday. Rest up now!
William George McArthur to JC Malick September 1, 2011 at 3:59 pm
JC,
Since it's a month away, I thought I'd inquire about the
arrangements for the Ederle Swim. I assume that we need lodging for the
night before the race; do we need lodging for the night after as well?
Cathy has decided not to go on the trip, so it's just me heading up. I
think you mentioned off-loading the kayak at the start on Friday night
and also a shuttle? I will have to figure out where to leave the XTerra.
The kayak rack is possibly too high for parking garages, even without
the kayak.

Once the above stuff has been sorted out, we need to discuss the
logistics of the actual race, including feeding and navigation.

I guess you're very psyched about the 9/11 crossing. I sure wish I
could take part in it. Do you have a good navigation plan worked out?

Somehow, I mislaid your new email address, please shoot me an email so I can recapture it. Thanks.

Hi John! We have some Olympic tickets for next summer. My parents are coming with us, at least one friend, and our daughter Rachel. We'll be in town from around Jul27 to Aug2. Any advice on areas or places to stay? Hopefully you'll be around so we can catch up with you while in London.
Take care, Katie
John McArthur August 23, 2011 at 2:32 pm
Excellent news - Julie and clan are likely to be here as well along with my mom.

I suppose it will be largely down to cost as to where you want to stay.

I would probably try to get a short term apartment (they tend to rent for weeks at a time) as you then have a kitchen and more than one room and it is less like living out of a suitcase.

http://citylifeapartments.com/apartment-type/studio/city-road-apartments-city-london-ec1/#more-850

is a company that my firm uses for executives in town. When I looked a while ago, they had some places that could hold a family and if they don't jack prices up for the olympics it could be cheaper than a hotel.

North London (Camden Town where we live, Belsize Park and Islington) are pretty close to transport to the olympic park and may be easer to find places in because they are easy into the City where most execs work.

If you want to go with a hotel, a couple areas that would worth looking in would be Bloomsbury ( I am pretty sure that some friends of mine stayed at http://www.montaguehotel.com and really liked it).

You could also look around tower or london bridges which will be very easy to get to the olympic park from.

There is always the holiday inn in Camden Lock which is very close to our place and right in Camden Market

http://www.holidayinncamden.co.uk/

Hope that helps - please let me know if you need anything else or need any help making arrangements.

We are definitely around during the games - we have tickets to swimming, modern pentathlon, beach volleyball and canoe slalom - but other than that will be watching on the non-stop coverage at home.

Hope all is well

John

Glad to hear it sounds like we may be having a European reunion next year! And thanks so much for the info and links, we'll start checking them out. We have tickets to gymnastics, beach volleyball, and basketball. We also plan to watching cycling which has the bonus of being free with no tickets required. That is great you got swimming, I tried for swimming but didn't get them. We plan on seeing the end of the Tour prior to going to London so we will also be trying to work out the logistics of having our bikes since a few of us want to ride a stage or 2. It's going to be quite a trip. Hope you are having a good summer!

**Hi Bill! Can you please pass this message along to your lovely wife from Beth and I?**
Sweet Cathy--
I'm going to have to say that today just isn't a good day. We're both not feeling good. We would love to feel well and visit, but just not this week! I want to be able to enjoy myself with you, not feel the way I do. My Mom's eye is so swollen that it looks like there is a ping pong ball stuck under it. Thank you for being so caring and loving, and I hate when I have to say no, but today just isn't a good day. We'll do lunch another time, most definitely. We miss you. We'll come to DE if you're sick of coming out here. I'd love to see your new home and that way you won't have to pay the ferry fare again. That would be fun!
Don't worry. We WILL find a week when both mom and i are feeling OK!! This is pathetic.
On one happier note--mom's shoulder is doing a little better!!!! I mean, she is still in pain, but her PT got her range of motion improved sooo much and I am so proud of her.
Love you Cathy--and thanks for loving us so much!
xo
Lauren P.S. Enjoy your time with your RV friends today!

Paddle Support
Bill:
I know I'm catching you at a bad time as you guys are probably about to spread your wings to fly home so I don't expect a response from you in the immediate! I think I told you that I am working at a new company now, right? Endless Pools? Anyway, my email correspondence has probably ceased and desisted via the banks email and wanted to get in touch with the gang as far as swim support for a few upcoming swims. Obviously I would love to have Joe and yourself there but with all the swims planned, I know you guys can't commit to all of them...plans are to start my season on May 22nd with a swim around Avalon/Stone Harbor...don't know if you guys will be up here for that one but could use support on the motor boat if anyone wanted to go for a short ride (even part of it)....June 25th is a big one....and one that Ed would especially be familiar with. So far another individual that swam across the English Channel (Darren Miller) and myself are swimming around Wildwood (more swimmers may join) and we're looking to start at around 7am (3 hours before low tide), from Grassy Sound Marina in North Wildwood and swimming clockwise around Wildwood. Those are the two most recent swims and really all that is cooking at the moment for the beginning of the season (I don't want to do too many island swims in the middle of the summer due to safety and the increased boat traffic) I am on the books for an Absecon Island swim with a charter boat on August 5th and then still plan to swim across the Delaware on 9/11 (that will be a really good training swim for both of us prior to Ederle on October 1st). Enjoy your fleeting moments in FL and I hope Cathy and you have a safe journey back north!

JC Malick August 3, 2011 at 8:08 am
Wild Bill! I see you're still training hard!!! How was the bike race a few weeks ago? Any chance you may be able to help out with the around Wildwood swim on Monday August 22? I'll pay your way over on the ferry! So far Phil is in but I definitely would like to have someone to help him out for part or most of the swim...hoping Joe and you are still a go for October 1st as well...MORE important, hoping to get together with you guys sometime soon to grab a few brews, the bike ride in the fall, and or the crossing of the Delaware via kayak. When is the Coombs Run? This weekend? Sorry to bombard you with questions Professor and hopefully Kathy and you are doing well!
William George McArthur August 3, 2011 at 9:43 am
JC, The 160 mile RAIN ride went well. I have to check with Cathy about 8/22. I'm in for 10/1 but we haven't made any arrangements for lodging yet. I'm running at Coombs/Douglass this Saturday. I'll let you know about Wildwood. BTW, do you have a good handle on the currents timing at Herford Inlet and Cape May Inlet?
JC Malick August 3, 2011 at 10:34 am
Bill, I do have a pretty good grasp on the current for 8/22. Per Salt Water Tides, Low Tide at Grassy Sound (just south west of Hereford Inlet) is at 8:18 (sunrise at 6:18). Plan was to start at 5:30 AM and work the way out the inlet but again it will depend on the wind situation for that day. Moon percentage is 50% which is pretty good. Obviously you have a place to stay if you came on Sunday to stay overnight. I wish I could meet up with you guys Saturday but I will not be down the shore this weekend. Ideally we could arrange accommodations together (if we got a two bed unit with a couch, I would opt for the couch.
William George McArthur August 4, 2011 at 6:10 am
JC, I have only traversed Hereford once, and that was following a big Sea Tow boat and with a huge crowd of kayakers. I am very nervous about trying a traversal in the dark without a very knowledgeable guide. This reminds me too much of that dark trip down the Bay that I took on our failed try for your Cape Island swim. Sorry, but I have to decline. Good luck on the trip.
William George McArthur to Julia McArthur July 26, 2011 at 5:40 am
Julie,
Not sure if I sent the following email message to the right address:

"Julie,
We're trying to get our fall calendar in order, so I'd like to finalize plans for the Detroit Marathon Relay. My participation is entirely optional at your pleasure. If you have a team without me, no problem. If you want me to participate, I'll do it at any running distance that you require. If I'm to participate, we will stay in the area for Saturday and Sunday nights (maybe Friday also, if we drive hard that day). I will need to know how to register and who and what to pay. I see that you are not in the midst of the heat wave at the moment, so enjoy the cooler weather. "

Goofy Package
Stacey said that you have info about a special package of photos and videos for the Goofy Challenge. If true, please send me a link. Thanks.
Bill McArthur January 14, 2011 at 3:29 pm
it's just on the asi site, they should have sent you an individual link for each of the races with proofs of all the pics and a video of the finish (pretty cool actually). if you click on any of the pictures to enlarge it, then click on the "Order Products" button. Then on the right there is a breakdown of the products, click the "digital" tab, and there should be a product called the "goofy gallery super download" for 149 bucks that has all the pics and videos from both races. i haven't bought it yet, but i think i will.
William George McArthur January 15, 2011 at 9:15 am
Thanks. I might order it if they fix my marathon finish video. They started the video after I'd finished.
Bill McArthur January 15, 2011 at 9:35 am
they had mine wrong as well. i called them up and they fixed it while i was on the phone with them, they were very helpful. i had the clock time ready from the pic of my crossing the line. the woman that fixed it for me mentioned that a lot of the marathon videos were off by 30 seconds or so.
William George McArthur January 16, 2011 at 6:08 am
I sent an email and will call on Monday if they don't fix it before then. I do plan to buy the package.
William George McArthur January 17, 2011 at 5:15 pm
I got a support guy to fix my video and I ordered the Goofy super download package. I ordered it this morning and the download isn't ready yet. When it's ready, I'll see if both Stacey and I can download it. Otherwise, I'll set up an FTP for the stuff.

Dover DU
I had about a two hour conversation with Jess and it went very well. To make a long story short, I received a few apologies and we have been invited to bring the team and THE TRAILER to the Dover DU and the Lake Como Tri.

It was almost too good to be true. Let's hope it wasn't and things all go forward in a positive way from here.

Did you guys want to join us in Pocono just for the fun of it?

Dave
William George McArthur March 27, 2011 at 7:05 am
Dave,
Thanks for the update. I registered for the Dover Du just now. No thanks on the Poconos, I don't think I could take it being a spectator.

We will be leaving Florida on May 15 to head north. Normally, we spend two nights on the road. I would like to bring the bike up to your shop before the Dover Du on the 21st, if possible.

Congrats to your Mom and Arvilla
Please pass on my congratulations to your Mom and Arvilla for their performances in the Goofy Challenge. When I hurt my calf back before Thanksgiving and switched to speed walking in my training, I realized how very hard it is to walk at a fast pace for hour after hour. I was very surprised to have done as well as I did and felt that all of my hard training and general endurance came through for me. Those two ladies did just as well as I did. I know how hard they worked. Thanks.
William George McArthur March 25, 2011 at 6:03 am
Which cadence sensor did you get for your Garmin 305? Do you like it or would you recommend another brand? Also, tell me about your power meter. Thanks.
Phil Stoops March 25, 2011 at 6:05 am
@Bill...I picked up the standard Garmin bike sensor that configures to the Garmin 305 to put on the rear wheel of the tri bike only because my bike computer runs off the front wheel and when I'm on the trainer I don't have any data. So, this is for indoor training only.

I don't have a power meter but our new spin bikes at the Y do...so that's the power info I'm reporting.

GREAT job on the race the other day! I meant to say something to you. AWESOME!

William George McArthur March 24, 2011 at 1:36 pm
Dave,
I appreciate the very kind words. I feel blessed to be able to do
what I do and love it. I think that everyone can seek happiness by doing
what they are able to do. In doing so, they are making it possible to do
it again and again until they lose a capability due to age or injury.
When that happens, they continue to do what they're able to do without
regret. I used to be a pretty good handball player until my knees and
ankles couldn't take it any more. I used to be quite good at step
aerobics, exercising on 5 risers (which I've never seen anyone else do),

First time i've had a real coach in a loooooong time. Met with her today and first official workout will be Friday morning. It's mostly virtual as she will post workouts and i have to upload my HR data etc to her via a web portal they have set up with some group training sessions/testing @ their facility. How did you make out?
How did you make out Sunday? I tried to find results to post and couldn't. I know you were fantastic but how was the bike? Do you have an event results link?
William George McArthur March 22, 2011 at 6:49 am
I just posted my report. The results are a bit fuzzy, but here's the link: http://www.altavistasports.com/results/2011results/Gatorhalfduathlon03202011.htm. The bike was flawless, the rider was a bit on the old side. I was very happy with my average speed of 18 mph. I don't emphasize speed work on the bike because I'm still concentrating on endurance. I noticed something strange. At times I found it faster to ride on the horns rather than on the aerobars. I couldn't figure out which was better. I still have a lot to learn.
Dave Moses March 22, 2011 at 7:23 am
Thanks Bill. Maybe with all the running you have been doing your quads and calves have the upper hand on your glutes and hamstrings. As you spend more time on the aero bars you will see that equalize. I think the big thing to remember is even though you may be faster on the base bar right now staying in your tuck for most people will keep their running muscles fresher when they get off the bike and have to run.

Please keep that type of feedback coming. It helps me a great deal in my learning curve. Have a great day and give yourself plenty of recovery time.

Great job,
Dave

Hi Aunt Cathy and Uncle Bill,

Thank you so much for the lovely dress for Sophie's birthday. It is adorable and will fit nicely this summer. Although still a little big, I couldn't resist her wearing it in Florida (pic attached).

Cathy, it was so nice to spend some time with you. Thanks for the yummy lunch!

Team DRB
Existing and potential team DRB club members or volunteers,

If you are receiving this I hope it is because you are a team member or have expressed interest in becoming one. If you are already committed to another team you may have interest in one of the road trips we are considering. This letter is not to recruit team members or draw you away from any team you are a part of but to inform and share information. Team DRB supports all teams!

It looks like we are going to have a MUCH larger team for the 2011 season with quality people ranging from beginners to Ironmen including a couple of world class distance runners as well. Everyone brings unique skills for all to share but all are friendly and kind and I am honored to be a part of what you have built. This is your team and Cecilia and I are proud to support you!

I wanted to reach out to you and let you know that Team DRB is now registered with USA Triathlon and our club number is 2138. This means that any time you register for an event that is outside of the local events we are already a registered club, you can use our USAT number to do so.

Our newsletter will be out shortly and I will do my best to keep you informed on a monthly or bi monthly basis. In the mean time if you can get back to me with any events you plan on entering this year I would appreciate it. We will be providing support at most of the Delaware events but will also be looking at other events if we have good numbers to do on site support for you so let us know what your plans are.

Right now we are looking into the Black Bear Triathlon, June 5th in the southern end of the beautiful Pocono Mountains. The link for this event is: http://blackbeartri.cgiracing.com/ and it is not a Piranha event but Kare Holm and other existing members say it is a must do event for the quality and scenery. Your feedback on events you are doing is very important so get back to me when you can. There are also some events on the Delaware Piranha schedule that have very few or no sign ups for team DRB as of yet. If we can only support six to ten events this year I want to make sure we are supporting the events that you support in numbers.

I may repeat this email to some people who are on FB so sorry if you get it again but I want to cover everyone. Our team is growing with quality people and Cecilia, Reggie and I are all very excited about the 2011 season. I hope you are as well. Please share this and future communication with anyone you feel may want to know who we are and what we are doing this year.

Thanks and I hope to hear back from you soon,

Dave

My agenda is as follows, however, I am not signed up for any of these yet and am not positive which ones I will go to but I plan on making most of these for the PIRANHA SPORTS SERIES ONLY:
• Cascade Lake
• Tris For Our Veterans
• Du Dover
• Lums Pond
• Cape Henlopen
I plan on these for the New Jersey DQ Tri Du series:
• Parvin State Park Tri/Du
• Vincentown Sprint Tri/Du (the one I did last year)
And possibly a few more here and there for DQ Tri Du since they offer a du at every event.

I don't know if I want to hang my hat on a shifting scheme that requires electrical storage during a race. I'm hard pressed to believe that there's that much advantage to quicker shifting. I'm also dubious that even a "smart" electronic shifting system, that perhaps shifts automatically based on some control rules, would be better than the rider's decisions.

impressive eye-candy though.

Goofy
Congratulations on your great performance in the Goofy Challenge. When I hurt my leg before Thanksgiving and started training on speed running, I realized how difficult it is to walk for long distances at a fast pace. I trained extremely hard and was very pleased with my results. You did essentially the same as I did, so I'm in awe of your results too. I was hoping to walk the first 25 miles of the marathon with you, but didn't see you in the start corral (or at all). We're thinking about coming back in 2012.

Also... I'm looking at blue tooth headsets for him. The reviews on the "apple" store weren't very good on any of the sets. The only set I found that was "Sweat-proof" was the "Philips ActionFit Bluetooth Stereo Sports Headset". What do you think?
Phil Stoops December 16, 2010 at 7:49 am
Stacey...not sure on either unfortunately....I dont have either...as for bike rack I think it depends on if you want to mount something....as for bluetooth stereo headsets that's one your research would have to discover...

sorry I couldn't be more help.

Congrats on the half
Just read your report of the Bassman half. Congrats on finishing, and winning your age group :-). Nice job on the bike. 18mph is pretty quick for that distance. Didn't stick around for the awards, eh? Not me, I treasure every one that I have (which is only a couple at this point).

Anyway....keep it up. You're an inspiration to those of us who hope to continue with this endurance sports stuff as we move along in age.

Remembering the Fallen Documentary Update
Thank you to all who've submitted to our 'Remembering the Fallen' documentary project. We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and personal pride shown by so many Veterans’ families. There has been tremendous response to our call to action, and we humbly thank you for suggesting your soldier's story. Veteran stories represented so far date back all the way to the American Civil War!

We are still reviewing preliminary submissions, and look forward to sharing news with our Facebook community on our progress. We thank you in advance for your patience if you've submitted and not yet heard back from us. If you have not yet submitted, please do so. We are especially eager to get more stories from World War 1 and the Korean War, but welcome ALL stories regardless.

To submit for this project, please visit the attached link.

Mike Brocious September 20, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Hey! Great to hear from you. I just peeked at your time from the half-marathon. Dude, you rock! You've done well to be that fast in the 70+ age group. Good luck in the half-Ironman. I did a couple of them myself and even completed Ironman Lake Placid in 2007 (if you're bored someday you can read about it here: http://65.110.67.245/mike/races/). I'm not fast at all, but I enjoy the challenge. Good luck and stay in touch...I'll be curious to see how you like the triathlon scene.

Phillies July 9
Bill

Ran into a snafu. We were to been given Greg Dobb's seats for the July 9th game.

Unfortunately the Phillies felt he had no value and he is no longer with the team so the tickets are not available either.

I would have to purchase tickets now to that game. I already bought 4 for Alex, Arvilla and the kids for about $45 each. Do you want me to buy two for you guys as well? I can get them in the same section. Up high behind home plate. Great for watching the game and fireworks.

Let me know.

Sorry!

bike
Bill

Do you like your new bike? I'm considering one for Alex that would be primarily used on my indoor trainer.

Where and how did you come by it?

New/old friends
Andrea, I remember you well and am glad we're friends again. Although we live in Cape May, NJ, we are currently in NC helping our youngest move to Chapel Hill. Once she is settled, we will visit our son in GA and then head in our very small RV for FL and warm weather. Since we are traveling, I am sharing my husband's laptop, thus the strange nautical jargon.

Race photo
Steve,
Your photo: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=41333&id=1777009848 means a lot to me. My son has lost a lot of weight and it was a real joy to run with him for the first time in many years in this race. Would it be possible for me to get a hi-res copy of the photo by email? I'll be glad to pay a fee for it. Thanks. Bill

Love the finger shoes. I have a pair for kayaking and am looking forward to a pair for trail running when they become available later this month.

New friend
Thanks Carla. It's great to see you and hear from you. What are you doing in Philly? Our two daughters live in the environs: Glen Mills and Doylestown. Bill told me that you are both going to this year's Ship rugby reunion. Have fun. Cathy

Last year Xmas gift
Bill

You might remember that last year you gave me a disc repair tool. Well I stashed it away and thankfully haven't had to use it until today.

Alex and the girls gave me a new xbox game for Christmas and I tried to put it in today and it wouldn't run. I had played it in the last few weeks so I was a little bummed.

I noticed two scratches running the entire circumfernce of the disc. I remembered your gift and dug it out. Well needless to say after a simple setup and about a two minute repair process I had repaired the disc. The game plays fine!

Saved me a trip to the game store and possibly a $60 replacement. (I don't have the game insurance on this one)

Thanks again for the thoughtful gift. Even a year later. Amazing because I really never thought I would use it.

Phil

PS: I think G put this disc into the Wii by mistake creating the scratches. I found it in there one time....
